Teaching Functional Academics and Daily Living Skills

Daily living and self-help skills are a necessary part of everyday and are necessary skills to acquire. Shining Stars believes students are conditioned to develop independence through direct and repetitive participation in those activities. In combination with language, math, literacy and social and emotional development, self-help skills can be developed. For instance, working on brushing teeth is a fabulous opportunity to reinforce cooperation, teach motor and vocal imitation, teach the child to request items related to brushing teeth, receptively identify and label items and carry a conversation about those items. Participating in daily routines will make it easier for the child to master self-help skills.

A behavioural assessment, using the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning, Verbal Behaviour Milestones Placement Program, Brigance Assessment Tool and/or the Assessment of Functional Living skills, the assessments are used to determine your child’s needs, learning profile and goals. A fulsome Individual Academic and Behavioural Plan is developed. Shining Stars’ programs are overseen by our Clinical Supervisor, BCBA.

Why are Functional Academics and Daily Living Skills Necessary?

Shining Stars always asks the question: “where do I see my child after high school, after elementary school, as a young adult and what are my goals for my child as he grows?” It is pivotal for the child to manage a level of independence particularly when students transition from elementary to secondary or secondary to post-secondary. It is essential they have a level of confidence in order for them to function independently or semi-independently in the community. Teaching critical functional and daily living skills in conjunction with academic skills is necessary and paramount to ensuring the child can manage a level of independence in the community.

Our functional academic and daily living skills have included transitional supports, shifting from preferred to non-preferred tasks, handling and working with money, following directions, awareness of safety, reading street signs and knowing who to approach if lost.
